This past week, we took a brief trip up to Duluth, to the North Shore of Lake Superior, and inland to Voyageurs National Park, near International Falls, MN. For mid-June, the temperatures were unusually cool in Duluth, and the fog was ever-present!
The primary purpose for the trip was to finally tick off Voyageurs National Park... but with the historic floods, we decided to stay in a Duluth hotel and take the 2.5-3 hour drive for a day trip to the visitors centers in Ash River and Rainy Lake.
The Ash Lake area wasn't too impacted by the floods... but Rainy Lake is another story. There were two spots on the road where they "raised" the road with cement barriers, sand bags, and tons of gravel. The campgrounds are closed, the docks are under water, and the waterfront is completely under water. So the park-provided boat tours are on hold until waters subside.
The high waters are also impacting all the rivers feeding into Lake Superior! We were surprised at the chocolate milk-colored water pouring out of the rivers and into the lake!
As we headed down I-35 on our way out of town, we watched the temperature quickly soar. Starting at 48 degrees (F) in Duluth, and settling at 95 degrees (F) back home.
Thanks for stopping by!
