Table runners: How big is too big?

Updated: Jul 23, 2022

I was working off a pattern that recommended a table runner with 8" blocks, interspaced with 4" dividers... and a row of 10 of the star blocks. After putting together 8, I realized it was time to stop. I think this will be long enough for an "every day" table runner for our dining room table.

About the Table Runner:

This sawtooth star runner was made with mini charm squares from the Cranberries and Cream collection for Moda, and the contrasting beige is from the Happy Days line by Sherri and Chelsi (for Moda). This one grew out of one of my goals for this year, to improve my accuracy in HST and Flying Geese blocks.

About the Table:

This is a family heirloom. My mom and dad purchased it (and had it custom-made for them) about 20-22 years ago, from an Amish Furniture store in LaCrescent, MN. It was quite a haul to get it from the store to the family home outside of Chicago, I’ll (about a 6 hour trek). My mom loved this table and was so excited to be able to replace the very ornate (and fragile) one she had been babying for most of the 35 years of their marriage, and we had many incredible week night dinners around it, as she wanted to savor every moment with it.

After we lost her, and Dad decided to move up to central Wisconsin, we had to load that beast of a table (and it's 8 heavy chairs) up and again cart it many hours to its new home. There, it was "the" table, and dad eat at least 2 meals at it every day for the next 16 years. We always gathered at Dad's for thanksgiving, and as the years went by, the family grew and grew, and we outgrew even the generous footprint of this table. With Dad, the three kids and their spouses, and eventually six quickly growing kids, we had many fun times, and a few game night fights, around this table.

In the spring of 2020, we we lost Dad, and had to pack up his house, it was time for the table and chairs (and the matching china hutch) to my own outside the Twin Cities. That last drive was the one that nearly killed us, because this beautiful oak, Amish-built table ways about a million pounds (or it may have just felt that way). So here it sits, as our main table... and we are building more family memories around it.

With that family history in mind, I guess a bigger table runner isn't too much. Because the most amazing part of this table is that the finish is still unmarred, and that's a huge legacy to try to uphold!

Thanks for stopping by!
