Moda's Blockheads 4 (Week 5)

I've been trying to keep up on a weekly basis with Moda's 28 week, 36 block sew along! I haven't yet decided on a setting for the blocks, and am making some smaller ones (4.5" finished) and more of the bigger ones (9" finished).

This week, I was surprised to see on Friday that the second bonus block had dropped!

I was able to find some time on Friday and Saturday (once all my plans got cancelled because I had to quarantine) and this is what I came up with:

Block 5: 2 of 5 by Barbara Grove of Me & My Sister Design. Her design was a simple churn dash, leaving a lot of room for creativity, if one wanted it, or a simple and quick block, if one didn't. I saw many really amazing options show up in sewer's brag posts on Facebook, from doing flying guess as the inner dash border to really complicated piecing in the center.

As you can see, I opted for a simple design, enhanced with fussy cutting the center image. I did this one in both the larger (9" size) and smaller (4.5" finished) sizes.

I also decided to make Bonus Block #2 (a Design by Michelle White of Moda). Her original

block in the 9" version seemed a bit too plain for me, so instead, I took four of the 4.5" blocks, and sewed them together into a 9" block.

This is the most complicated I've gotten with any of the designs so far. It seems like a lot of the posters on the BH4 Facebook group completely change around the design and make it their own, which is inspiring and really cool to see. It's challenging me to get beyond my comfort zone of just following a pattern!

So the photos at the bottom are a gallery of the blocks I've made so far (once again, I'm using the Sweet Beginnings line of Fabric by Maywood studios, and the background is Kona Snow (all layer cakes, purchased from Shabby Fabrics).

I'm trying to decide on a layout, so I can purchase any extra yardage from the collection, while it's still available. I like this one by Robin Pickens, but I'm not yet sure if I'll want to do that many of the mini blocks. I also like this one from Kimberly Jolly, but I want more sashing... at least in Snow, because some of my mini blocks are measuring a bit small. I will probably go ahead and work on some layouts in EQ 8 as the series continues (I've been recreating my blocks with the actual fabrics I've used), and figure out a layout that works for what I end up sewing

Thanks for stopping by!
