This spring, I picked up a book about baby quilts that are made with charm packs and
yardage. There was a quilt pattern for the Chandelier quilt, blocks set en pointe that begin to look like a beaded curtain or the crystals from a chandelier.
It's a block that I've been interested in attempting for a while, but hve no need for a smaller quilt, so I decided to up-size it. After a few weeks of playing with graph paper (and excel), I decided to finally take the plunge and purchase EQ8 and begin designing it in a quilt program.
Doing that gave me the chance to try different color studies (using the actual Moonstone by Edyta Sitar fabric that I wanted to use), and better manage the construction of the quilt.
Piecing it together went pretty well (though the row of 13 blocks was a bit cumbersome!). One of the keys was definitely the heavy use of Best Press and careful pressing.
Here's a shot of my border collie mix Molly -- she loves to try out the quilts as I'm sewing.
The quilt took 3 charm packs of Moonstone, a ton of background fabric (Kona snow) and 6 pieces of 2.5" squares from a jelly roll I have.
The quilt was long-arm machine quilted by Wildflower Quilt Co. in Lakeville, MN and I was in the store picking up fabric for another project, and happened to look through the window into the longarm room... and saw it on the quilt machine!
Overall, I'm thrilled with how my first EQ laid out block turned out. I discovered some fun skills, and really love the colors in this quilt.
Thanks for stopping by!
